Nancy Wakesho Mkala (played by Angela Ndambuki)
Educated in Nairobi. She is the wife of Albert Mkala and has one
son. She worked as an assistant in a Nairobi pharmacy since leaving
college and for a while, ran the Good Hope Pharmacy in Makutano.
After the fire that destroyed her pharmacy, Nancy now works at the
Health Centre as the pharmacy assistant. Both her parents are deceased.
Her Mother passed away during childbirth while her father died due
to an injury sustained during a tussle with Snake (refer to Season
One)
She is independent, bright, and stubborn. She’s a fighter
and has a great heart. She has great friendships with the market
women, especially Mama Mboga.
Albert Mkala (played by Peter King Mwania)
He is Nancy’s husband. Formally a perpetual student, moving
from one course to another, Albert moved permanently to Makutano
after Nancy’s one night stand with Karis. He started a detective
agency and established the cyber café. He has a lot of issues
and the affair Nancy had with Karis is never far from his mind.
He has a bit of a hidden past that is brought out more this season
with the arrival of Maria, his ex girlfriend.
He is interesting, witty, and at times misguided and a little insensitive.
Loves to get to the bottom of things and is logical and methodical
about it. Albert is a gentle soul with a huge intellect. An eccentric
who finds his place in Makutano.
Karis Mabuki (played by Maqbul Mohamed)
Karis
is unmarried and works in the bar for his father. He was educated
abroad and moved back to Makutano to help his dad. He is getting
past his run ins with the law at the beginning of this season. But
his ways can never change. Karis is a very intelligent sleaze ball.
He is a con man and is in debted to some rather violent dubious
men. He is a master class liar and with him, you never know what
is true and what isn’t.
He is a spoilt boy…seeing as he was the only child of his
parent’s loveless marriage. This is the main thing to blame
for his selfish and egocentric attitude. He rarely takes responsibility
for his actions. He’s bad but he’s sexy and you can’t
help but love him…sometimes.
Mrs. Rose Mulani (played by Salome Kinyanjui)
Rose Mulani is the agent of change in Makutano. She came
here as the new Headmistress of the school when Free Primary Education
was introduced. She is married to Jonathan Mulani, who runs the
local bookshop. She has 4 children now, the oldest being Redempta
“Red” Mulani…whom she has a deep love for but
has a classic mother-teenage daughter relationship.
She can be strict, is very well educated, well respected and a natural
leader. She is passionate but has a very sensitive side. She is
trapped in an unhappy marriage and he doesn’t bring out the
best in her.
Redempta “Red” Mulani (played by Emily Wanja)
Beautiful, bright and full of energy. She sings and this
is her chosen career path. She is determined to follow this until
the top of her dreams to be a singing superstar like Kylie Minogue.
Despite her external shell, she is quite sensitive and vulnerable.
She’s smart and gutsy and seizes the opportunity whenever
it presents itself.
Red is a daddy’s girl and can weasel anything out of her dad.
Her mum and her shared a classic teenage daughter –mother
relationship…rocky. She’s been having a relationship
with Philip “PP” Baraka but that ends as she sets her
sights on Nairobi to pursue her career dreams. Red is a girl on
the cusp of being a woman with all the lessons to learn about being
an adult.
Philip “PP” Baraka (played
by Charles J. Ouda)
The
youngest son of Mr. Hannington Baraka and grandson of Senior Chief
Baraka. PP is very quiet. He works on his father’s farm while
not at college. He is timid and humble. He is strong, shy, not flashy,
good looking in a rugged young way. He is humorous to those who
know him. He sings in church and is a very talented singer, but
he doesn’t show it. PP is unappreciated because his father
is prouder of his elder brothers and sister.
PP loves soccer, and Red is his one and only. But he can’t
follow her to Nairobi. PP wants to take over the farm. A farm boy
at heart, his beauty is more inside than outside.
Penina Okodi A.K.A Mama Mboga (played by Naomi Kamau)
Mama Mboga runs a stall in the market. For a while, she run the
cyber café with Albert but longed for the market life with
Margaret and the other Market women. A former victim of an abusive
husband, Mama Mboga is one of Makutano’s most active and strongest
characters. She is a member of the SIMSC at the school and was among
the market women, who came together to bring down Snake’s
changa’a den, build the health centre and now form a Market
Women’s Association. Mama Mboga is strong; due to all he tragedy
she has faced but still greets each day with a smile. She is Margaret’s
best friend and was the first to discover her HIV status. She was
the rock, supporting Margaret through the tough times.
A hopeless gossip, she can’t miss a good bit of gossip and
pass it on willingly. She is smart, witty and shrewd. She is the
true Makutano survivor.
Maspeedy (played by Onyango Owino)
No one knows where Maspeedy comes from but one thing is
for sure…Makutano Junction now relies on him for all things
milk related. Everyone loves Maspeedy…and Maspeedy loves all.
He is superstitious and believes a lot of strange things…like
ghosts. He gets to see a lot in Makutano, riding high on his iron
horse.
He has a crush on Small Sharon…but does not tell her directly
at first. He is kind hearted and is always hanging around with his
three best friends…PP, his bicycle and Mvula, Mr. Baraka’s
top milker.
Washington Ambrose Roosevelt Kajiwe (played
by Patrick Serro)
If a cat has nine lives, Washington has twelve! When we first saw
Washington, he was a clinical officer, extorting funds from the
people of Makutano as he ran a clinic. When we return to Makutano
seven months later, he is now a Bishop. He is charged with the souls
of Makutano. He starts an orphanage that is meant to “help“
the orphan children of Makutano.
He enjoys a good card game and is not keen on women. He holds grudges
and has a very manipulative streak in him. He is very bright, abrupt,
verbose and garrulous.
Cheryl (played by Lucia Shikuku)
Cheryl
was not always the apple of Karis’s eye. She was once the
queen bitch of Makutano. She is a seller of Matumba in the market
and is always sharply dressed…flaunting her great body. Now,
she is more kind hearted to certain women in the market…especially
Mama Mboga and Margaret. She is great friends with Margaret after
Margaret was the only one who took her for her VCT test.
Cheryl is sensitive, and Karis is her one true weakness. She loves
him despite his neglect of her. Eventually she gets past it and
moves on. She is an artist and loves to paint.
Ananius Hosea Matano (played by Philip Luswata)
Mr Matano is one of the newest faces in Makutano. He is
a businessman who is interested in developing Makutano. He is not
very welcomed at first…but like Maspeedy before him, he grows
on them. In the end, he marries Margaret.
Matano is sharp, witty and no nonsense. He doesn’t take rudeness
and as he puts it “…I’ll show you my good manners
if you show me yours.” He is a romantic but a little nervous,
as is seen with his relationship with Margaret.
Margaret (played by Carol Midimo)
Margaret is one of the market women. She has no husband
because he died of AIDS. She discovers that she too is HIV+ and
becomes the case for living positively…with the support of
her friends and family.
Like her best friend Mama Mboga, she is a tough, strong woman. Her
marriage was abusive and she survived. She runs a stall in the market.
She is supportive, caring, and a true Makutano woman. Forever smiling,
she is suspicious of Matano…at first.
Dr. Charles (played by Tony Njuguna)
Dr. Charles is brought into Makutano as the new Doctor
at the Health Centre. He is charged with caring for the bodies of
Makutano’s residents. He is handsome and straight forward.
He believes in true health and helping the people of Makutano.
Dr. Charles is the new heart breaker in Makutano…and he is
the man snatching the woman from the old heart breaker. He has a
weakness for Cheryl and he is encouraging of her art.
